Water early and deeply
Early morning watering reduces evaporation and gives foliage time to dry. Longer, less frequent watering usually encourages deeper roots better than a short daily sprinkle. The right amount depends on soil, grass, sun, and recent weather.
Check where the water goes
Watch each irrigation zone. Water hitting pavement, misting into the wind, or running down the curb is not helping the lawn. Broken heads, poor aim, compacted soil, and excessive run time can all waste water while dry spots remain.
Accept seasonal dormancy when appropriate
Not every lawn must remain bright green through every dry period. Healthy warm-season turf can slow or go dormant under drought stress. Decide whether your goal is survival, moderate color, or a consistently green appearance, then water accordingly.
